He Will Restore Your Soul

Psalm 85:6–9

[6] Will you not revive us again,
that your people may rejoice in you?
[7] Show us your steadfast love, O LORD,
and grant us your salvation.

[8] Let me hear what God the LORD will speak,
for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints;
but let them not turn back to folly.
[9] Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him,
that glory may dwell in our land.

Imagine this scene. You live in a country that has been ravaged by war and famine. People are dying everyday of either bomb strikes, starvation, or disease. In the middle of all of this, you think about the days when the land was fruitful, when peace existed, and everything seemed to be going well. You knew in those times that you were being blessed by God, and you are now praying and hoping that he will once again revive your country and being peace and prosperity to your people.

This is exactly what had been happening in this Psalm. Misfortune had come upon the people of Israel and the writer of this Psalm was asking God to restore his people and his land once again.

Now if you are reading this and you were born and raised in America like me, than this is something that you can’t really relate to. But that doesn’t mean that this still doesn’t apply to us. Think about the following words of the Psalmist:

[6] Will you not revive us again,
that your people may rejoice in you?

Are you in a place of spiritual and emotional darkness? Are you facing financial, marital, familial, or work troubles that feel crippling? Are you feeling numb to the world around you? You are in a place where you need revival. You need to cry out to God that he would revive your soul that your joy and hope would be found in him.

[7] Show us your steadfast love, O LORD,
and grant us your salvation.

Whatever our situation, whether emotional or physical, we need God’s never giving up and never ending love to continually be with us that he would pursue us and sustain us through whatever trial or trials we might be facing.

[8] Let me hear what God the LORD will speak,
for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints;
but let them not turn back to folly.

We serve a God who so desires to bring peace to the hearts of his people, yet he calls us to walk in his was and to obey his commands. As Jesus writes in John 14:15-17:

[15] “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. [16] And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, [17] even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

God, through Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit, desires to work wonders in our lives and hearts. He wants to revive our souls and he wants to help us through the emotional and physical trials that come our way. However, he calls us to walk in his ways, to turn to him in faith, to trust him and put our full hope in him. In fact a good question for us to ask ourselves is this:

If we are stuck in a place where we are emotionally and spiritually cold, if we are dealing with relational strife and fighting, is it because we have been disobeying God?

[9] Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him,
that glory may dwell in our land.

But there is hope. Turn to the Lord, stand in awe of God, and love him with all your heart soul, mind, and strength, walk in his ways, and he will bring the salvation that you so badly desire. He may not perfectly take you out of the physical situation that you are in, but he will revive your soul, he will bring peace to your spirit, and you will experience his full and everlasting life, love and joy.
