The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof,
the world and those who dwell therein,
for he has founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the rivers.
We live in strange times don’t we? Everyone is beginning to adjust to a new normal. Work from home. Kids home. Loss of income. Social distancing. Quarantine. Stores closed. You name it and it has probably been affected by the rise of COVID-19. However, in these times and days of uncertainty we need to remember one overarching truth:
Everything was made by God, belongs to God, and is controlled by God.
Now, this might feel like I am beating the same drum that many Christians around the world have already hit, but can we really emphasis this truth too much? Of course not! Think about the magnitude of what the Psalmist is saying in these two little verses.
The earth, its inhabitants, and everything that happens in it belong to God.
It is easy to read this point and just glide right past it. But think about a child with their parent. If you grew up in a home where you had stable, loving, and caring parents you know that it was really easy to live life with a confident and care free attitude. Why? Because you always knew that your parents where there to take care of you, help you, support you, and love you. You knew that they were in control and they were going to figure out solutions to whatever problem arose.
Now apply that same truth to a perfect and powerful God. Everything belongs to him, and like a perfect parent he takes care of everything that he made, and everything that he owns. This especially includes his people. We are continually reminded in the psalms of God’s steadfast love (Ps. 136:1), protection (2 Thess. 3:3), power (Eph. 3:20), and grace (Ps. 103:8). These attributes are all true of God and he uses them all for the good of his people. He loves us with an infinite love. He protects us with a perfect and full protection. He powerfully works for our good and our joy. And he gives us an infinite grace and mercy that know no end. He will and does take care of his creation and especially his people.
If everything is created by God and belongs to him, then he is in control of it all.
This truth is so profound and glorious. The short and skinny of it is that God’s got it. So instead of trying to control our surroundings we can trust that he will protect us and take care of all our needs. Instead of freaking out about jobs or even the possibility of getting the virus we can rest in him believing he will meet all of our needs and will give us what is best. And instead of cowering in fear we can boldly stand firm on the truth of Christ and proclaim it to a world that is so lost in worry and doubt.
Does this mean that we shouldn’t care about what is happening and take necessary precautions? No. We of course want to be wise and do our part to help combat this virus and what is happening in our world. But we don’t do it out of fear. Instead we do it with confidence in our God and out of love for our neighbor knowing that God’s got this and will use it for our good and for the spreading of his kingdom and glory.
So take heart Christian, God has created everything, is in control of everything, and right now is working for your good and for the spread of his kingdom. And he is doing this with a perfect and everlasting love and power that will know no end.
