We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven.
I am the proud father of three young kids. My youngest boy is 4, my middle daughter is 6, and my oldest boy is 9. Now, the amazing thing about my 4 year old is how confident he is. When he sees one of the older two doing something like jumping off the couch or riding their bike he has an immediate confidence that he can do the same thing. It’s as if the example of his siblings going before him gives him the rock solid faith that he can do the same thing.
Now, think about Christ going before us. He lived the perfect life we could not life. He died on the cross for our sins so that we would not have to endure eternal punishment. He was resurrected in glory and went before us to secure a place for us in the eternal kingdom of God. He was and is God in the flesh who came from glory and returned to glory in order to ransom a people for himself.
In his life, death, and resurrection he not only secured a place for us in heaven, but he also showed us how we are to live. Jesus in this way was an example for us of how to live as he gives us the hope of what is to come. But here is the important part that should produce confidence and faith within us. He didn’t leave us to do it on our own. He empowers us, by his Spirit, to live for him, and to live with the hope of the eternal life to come.
Think about how amazing that is. My 4 year old has the confidence to do crazy things just because he saw his brother and sister doing it. Yet, we can and should have a rock solid confidence to live like and for Christ because he secured a place for us, and because his Spirit lives within us which enables us to live that way. Again, we are not left to do it on our own.
Like the believers in Colossae, this should produce within us a super natural confidence in all situations and a sacrificial love for God and others that so goes beyond the bounds of human understanding that people begin to take notice. This is so important in a time like this.
As believers, in the midst of scary and hard times, we must live with a supernatural confidence and hope. We have an eternity waiting for us that is better than anything that this world can offer. And until we get there we have a Savior who paved the way for us, and is empowering us to live for him until we get there.
